What does 🇮🇪 Ireland Flag mean?
Three vertical bands of green, white and orange, with green at the hoist. Green is linked to the Gaelic tradition, orange to supporters of William of Orange, and white to peace between them. It is everywhere on St Patrick’s Day, 17 March, in rugby and GAA chats, Irish heritage posts and pub trips. It is easily confused with the orange-first flag of Côte d’Ivoire.
Technically, 🇮🇪 is not a single character: it is the pair of regional indicator letters 🇮 🇪, which spell the region code IE. Apps that support flags combine the two letters into a flag; Windows does not draw country flags, so on Windows you see the letters IE instead – the emoji still arrives as a flag on the recipient’s phone.
🇮🇪 Ireland Flag is an emoji from the Flags category (country flags), added in Emoji 2.0 in 2015.
