Skin tones and gender options
Since Emoji 1.0, hand and person emojis can take one of five skin tone modifiers, based on the Fitzpatrick scale and ranging from light to dark. Without a modifier they appear in a neutral cartoon yellow. Many people and job emojis also exist in three forms: a gender-neutral person such as ๐งโ๐ณ, a woman like ๐ฉโ๐ณ and a man like ๐จโ๐ณ. On most phones you can long-press an emoji on the keyboard to pick a tone or variant, and the keyboard usually remembers your choice for next time.
Hand gestures and their meanings
Hand emojis are grouped by shape: open hands, partial-finger signs, single pointing fingers, closed fists and gestures that need both hands. Culture and context matter a lot here. ๐ is a friendly yes in many places but can feel curt in some chats, ๐ means โOKโ or โperfectโ to most people, and ๐ is read as please, thank you or prayer. ๐ค asks for luck, ๐ซถ sends love and ๐ค seals a deal. When writing to an international audience, it is worth checking that a gesture means what you intend.
People, roles and families
Beyond hands, the group includes everyday people with different hairstyles and ages, people gesturing like ๐คท and ๐, dozens of professions, fantasy figures like ๐ง and ๐ง, and people doing sports or simply relaxing. Family and couple emojis combine several people into one symbol through zero-width joiner sequences, so ๐จโ๐ฉโ๐ง is actually a few characters glued together. If a device does not support a particular combination, it may show the individual people side by side instead.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the skin tone of an emoji?
On iPhone and Android, press and hold a hand or person emoji on the keyboard and pick one of the five tones that pop up. Desktop emoji pickers offer a similar choice. Not every emoji supports tones: faces and most objects keep a single color.
What is the difference between ๐ง, ๐ฉ and ๐จ?
๐ง is the gender-neutral person, ๐ฉ is a woman and ๐จ is a man. The neutral version lets you describe someone without specifying gender, and many professions and activities now come in all three forms.
Why does a family emoji sometimes show up as separate people?
Family and couple emojis are sequences of several characters joined by an invisible zero-width joiner. If the font on a device does not include that exact combination, it falls back to drawing each person on their own, which is common on older systems.
