Cat faces: emotions with whiskers
The nine cat faces mirror the regular smileys with a feline twist. ๐บ and ๐ธ are happy, ๐น laughs until it cries, ๐ป has heart-eyes, ๐ผ wears a sly smirk and ๐ฝ blows a kiss. ๐ is the weary cat, often read as shocked, ๐ฟ is crying and ๐พ is pouting. Cat owners love reacting in character, and anyone can use them as a cuter version of a standard face.
Guide dogs and service dogs
Two dog emojis honor working animals. The guide dog ๐ฆฎ wears a harness and helps people who are blind or have low vision, and it pairs naturally with ๐งโ๐ฆฏ person with white cane. The service dog ๐โ๐ฆบ wears a vest and represents dogs trained to support people with other disabilities. Both were added in 2019 as part of a larger set of accessibility emojis.
Dog face or dog?
Like cats, dogs have both a face and a full-body emoji. ๐ถ dog face is the cute, front-facing puppy used for affection and reactions, while ๐ dog shows the whole animal and suits walks, parks and pet care. The poodle ๐ฉ adds a fancy, well-groomed touch. Cats follow the same pattern with ๐ฑ cat face and ๐ cat, and since 2020 there is also a ๐โโฌ black cat.
Frequently asked questions
How many cat emojis are there?
There are twelve cat emojis in total: the ๐ฑ cat face, the full-body ๐ cat, the ๐โโฌ black cat and nine expressive cat faces, from ๐บ grinning cat to ๐พ pouting cat. Big cats like ๐ฆ and ๐ฏ count as separate animals.
What does ๐โโฌ mean?
The black cat ๐โโฌ is used by black cat owners and for Halloween, witchy aesthetics and superstition. Depending on the culture, black cats are seen as unlucky or, in places like the UK and Japan, as a sign of good luck.
Is there a dog emoji for my breed?
Only the poodle ๐ฉ has its own breed emoji, alongside the working guide dog ๐ฆฎ and service dog ๐โ๐ฆบ. For other breeds, ๐ถ and ๐ are used, and each platform draws them in its own style, so your dog may look like a different breed on another phone.
